Coma request Bob Seger: Evie Branan falls from bed, bumps head, 5-year coma ends

Coma request Bob Seger: Evie Branan falls from bed, bumps head, 5-year coma ends, Evie Branan’s coma request to see Bob Seger after waking up from her 5-year coma is only a small part of the amazing story and miracle of 79-year-old Evie Branan. In an interview with NBC, Evie Branan talks about her request to see Bob Seger after her five-year coma, about writing letters to him, and about getting her nails done in preparation for the big meeting. In NBC’s Today video published on April 10, 2013, and in a MLive report published on April 11, 2013, Evie Branan says she doesn’t remember anything from the five years in her life that she was in a coma.

When asked why Evie Brenan requested to go to a Bob Seger concert after she woke up from her coma, she said that she didn’t know. "Why would I say that? … Maybe my last thoughts were Bob Seger before I had my stroke."

Evie Branan suffered a massive stroke six years ago and went from being a healthy woman to becoming a woman in a vegetative state at the Willowbrook Manor for the next five years until one day she fell out of bed, bumped her head, and "was able to speak and have a clear mindset again.”

The first words that came out of her mouth after her coma were, “I want to go to a Bob Seger concert."

Was Evie Branan thinking of Bob Seger during her five-years of being in a coma? Evie Branan says that she does not remember anything that happened during the past five years. She does appreciate the book where all visitors signed their names. Evie Branan also says that she does know that "someone up there is watching over us."

For the nurses and staff of the long-term care unit at Willowbrook Manor in Flint Township, Evie Branan is a miracle. While being in a coma, staff members say that Evie Branan was able to move but that she only had a gaze on her and that there was no communication between her and anyone around her.

“She couldn't speak, move or eat on her own, and the staff members were doing everything for her. That's how it was for more than five years, until she came out of a coma on May 7, 2011.”

When Evie Branan woke up from her coma after five years, she saw her granddaughter again who was in second grade when she had a stroke. When asked who the now grown-up girl was, Evie Branan’s granddaughter told her, “I am your granddaughter.” Evie Branan says that she had expected a little girl again but what she saw was a much older girl.

Evie Branan’s daughter tells the story of coming to the long-term care on May 7, 2011, and hearing from a staff member, “Wait until you see your mom.” And her reaction was “Oh no, oh no. What’s happened now?”

When she went into the dining room, she saw her mom, who had been in a coma for five years, “chabbering” and she describes the moment as “I went like, what happened?”

“She’s a talker.”

Evie Branan is not only described in a positive way as “a talker” but also as a “wild flower.” And Evie Branan’s daughter says that her mother has always been like that.

In regard to flirting with NBC’s photographer, 79-year-old Evie Branan says, “See, I like a man. I could teach him a lot of things.”

While Evie Branan doesn’t know why her first request after waking up from her five-year coma was to ask to go to a Bob Seger concert, she does know what she plans on saying when she sees him. “That I’ve always loved him.” And Evie Branan also has plans for what she is going to do. “I’m gonna put my arm around him because the therapist taught me how to do it. … And give him the biggest smooch he ever had.”

Today, Evie Branan is probably busy enjoying Bob Seger’s concert at the Palace in Auburn Hills, riding in a limo, and hopefully giving Bob Seger the “biggest smooch” ever.

Tomorrow, Evie Branan’s road to recovery and physical therapy will continue, and so does her advice to others who have health issues.

“Be like me. Don’t give up.”
